Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer mentor with Bigs & Littles NYC Mentoring

In Bigs & Littles NYC’s keystone mentoring program, youth ages 7-19 (enrollment till age 17), are carefully matched with a Big Sister or Big Brother who serves as adviser, role model, and adult friend. Matches are supported by a dedicated Professional Program Manager to oversee and guide the match relationship offering referrals and additional resources as needed. Our holistic approach to mentoring consists of working closely with the entire family ensuring better outcomes. We know the program works: 100% of our kids avoid pregnancy, 100% avoid arrest, 95% are promoted to the next grade, 100% graduate High School and 100% matriculate into college or a training program.

How does the Match Relationship work?

  • The relationship is one on one between a Big (volunteer mentor) and a Little (mentee)

  • Bigs serve as positive role models and friends who help Littles set and accomplish goals with a focus in the following areas: academic, health and wellness and socio-emotional.

  • Bigs and Littles plan and participate in fun activities together which form a lasting impact for both individuals

  • Matches meet Face-to-face: twice per month for about eight total hours (usually on the weekends)

  • Matches speak over the phone: once weekly to catch up

  • Matches attend workshops and activities that are offered throughout the year at the Bigs & Littles NYC office for hands- on match support and skill building

  • With constant support from a Program Manager (Masters level social worker or equivalent) at the agency

What is the Application Process like?

  • Phase 1: Complete a phone inquiry with a staff member.

  • Phase 2: Submit an application and updated resume.

  • Phase 3: Participate in an interview with a staff member.

  • Phase 4: Successfully complete background check and screening process.

  • Phase 5: If accepted, all applicants are required to attend mentor training.

What activities do matches do together?

We encourage our matches to explore all of New York City with an emphasis on common interests and activities that support match goals. This can include recreational, educational and informative outings such as agency workshops, museum visits, time spent outdoors and sports activities. We strongly recommend FREE to low cost outings and offer ideas and suggestions on a monthly basis.

Do I have to live in New York City to become a Big?

No, but mentors must live within the tri state area and be willing to travel to one of the boroughs to pick up and meet with their Little. We make every effort to take into account travel time and distance when making matches.
